To complement the annual major exhibition "The Grand Forbidden City: Architectural Art of the Imperial Palace" co-organized with the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Macao Museum of Art presents "Imperial City Ink: Charles Chauderlot's Forbidden City Ink Painting Exhibition." This exhibition features eighty-one ink paintings depicting scenes of the Forbidden City, offering Macao residents a more comprehensive appreciation of the beauty of the Forbidden City's architecture through diverse artistic expressions.
Charles Chauderlot, a French-Spanish artist born in Madrid in 1952, comes from a family of renowned sculptors, painters, and architects. He began studying painting under a teacher from the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts in 1963. From 1970 to 1975, he attended the University of Bordeaux, earning dual degrees in Law and Political Science. He has been a full-time artist since 1990.
After settling in China in 1997, Chauderlot abandoned Western painting techniques and adopted Chinese ink and brush, creating ink paintings on Western paper. He successfully combines Western principles of perspective with the Chinese painting concept of "leaving blank space." His works emphasize light, shadow, and tonal variations of ink, resulting in distinct layers within the composition. His unique style has earned acclaim from the art world and made him the first foreign artist granted permission by the Palace Museum to enter and depict the Forbidden City.
The number of exhibited works, eighty-one, corresponds to the eighty-one golden door studs on the gates of the Forbidden City. These studs symbolize the ultimate Yang (positive principle) and were historically a decorative privilege reserved exclusively for the emperor, a tribute to the magnificent splendor of the imperial palace.
