Dirks Theatre's 2017 premiere presents I Take Your Hand in Mine, a play exploring the body's memory and the imagination of letters, based on the relationship between Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper.
A playwright skilled at hiding behind his words leaves countless masterpieces... In the final moments of his life, he leaves his most precious words... word by word, for his beloved...
I Take Your Hand in Mine is a play by Carol Rocamora, adapted from over 800 letters exchanged between the famous Russian playwright Anton Chekhov and his wife, the Moscow Art Theatre's leading actress Olga Knipper. They knew each other for only six short years, during which they were often separated due to Chekhov's health and Knipper's theatre work. Yet, they maintained this honest and sincere marital relationship, which saw them together less often than apart, solely through the exchange of letters.
In contrast to today's era of advanced communication, this compels us to reconsider: what truly constitutes a real connection between people? Disease, distance, language, creation, desire, and the routines of daily life—how does one find the courage to make choices and take action in the face of loneliness, between observing and receiving discourse?
