About Poverty: What You Need to Know
- As of 2023, over 700 million people globally still live in extreme poverty.
- People living on less than $2 a day are primarily in sub-Saharan African countries.
- The 2019 Coronavirus pandemic may have increased the global poor population by 500 million, accounting for 8% of the total population. The global poverty rate may increase for the first time since 1990.
- According to SAR government data, 2.3% of Macau's population lives below the poverty line. Caritas Macau indicates that approximately 4% to 7% of the population in Macau is chronically food-insecure.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
To achieve a shared blueprint for humanity and the planet, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. Balancing "economic growth," "social progress," and "environmental protection," it outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key targets related to poverty include:
- By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
- By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services.
- By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.
