Synopsis
"The warm light refracted from the tin roof is gone, but the aroma of firewood-cooked rice still lingers in my mind..."
The wooden houses of Sung Sou Mei in Taipa began to be demolished on January 30, 2008, becoming history after the last two houses were cleared. Today, Sung Sou Mei is a parking lot. It is not a famous monument, unrelated to World Heritage, unnoticed by tourists, and even unknown to newcomers to Taipa. Apart from being part of Macau's impoverished class, many residents were new immigrants. Relying on relatives and friends or meager earnings after making ends meet, they rented small, inexpensive wooden huts. Some worked outside jobs, while others made a living by scavenging.
In the 1990s, the Hu family of four arrived at the village entrance of Sung Sou Mei, dragging large and small bags, and found their home beside a large banyan tree.
