"Historic Urban Landscape Conservation and Planning Youth Training 2023" is a training course designed based on the UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape. Focusing on the theme of the "Macao Historic Centre Protection and Management Plan," it aims to train twenty-five university students or young people aspiring to develop careers in cultural heritage management, urban planning, landscape design, and urban design. The program enhances their understanding of Macao's Historic Centre and urban planning, encouraging future participation in relevant public engagement activities to contribute ideas for building a harmonious, livable, and sustainable Macao.
In August 2020, Macao became China's third official member city of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC), following Suzhou and Dujiangyan. To support the OWHC's mission of promoting the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, encouraging experience exchange in cultural heritage protection and management, and strengthening cooperation among heritage cities, this training was initiated to deepen local university students' and young people's understanding of heritage conservation.
The "Historic Urban Landscape" concept is a UNESCO initiative for protecting urban World Heritage sites, closely linked to urban planning and particularly suitable for high-density urban heritage sites like Macao's Historic Centre. Since 2014, it has been promoted in East Asia as an "Asian Applicability Platform."
With the official announcement of the Macao Master Plan in February 2022 and the impending release of the Macao Historic Centre Protection and Management Plan, Macao's urban planning is entering an era of systematic regulation. This training aims to equip local youth with the knowledge to engage with and contribute to these important plans.
Building on the success of the 2019-2022 editions, this training consists of 10 learning units and a final sharing session, totaling 33 class hours. Each unit will be led by experienced instructors, covering topics such as:
The curriculum is professional, comprehensive, and tailored to Macao's local context, integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and big data for practical application.
Participants will form groups to present reports on topics related to cultural heritage management, urban planning, or landscape design based on their learning. Guests will be invited to review, comment on, and provide feedback on the presentations.
Participants who complete the entire course with an attendance rate of at least 80% and whose final sharing session report meets the required standard will receive a certificate.
