Hio Kok's annual production, Living in Macau, delves into the city's housing dream. For the sake of a better life, will you be trapped by four walls for a lifetime?
Based on interviews with hundreds of Macau families—those who have 'gotten on the property ladder', those who haven't, and those who got on only to fall off—this play tells the 35-year 'brick dream' of a family of six. From 1984 to the present moment, it's a story of blood, sweat, and tears.
In the 1980s, a massive influx of legal and illegal immigrants from mainland China caused property prices to skyrocket, drastically altering Macau's social structure, demographics, and way of life. The Lou couple has been 'chasing' their homeownership dream for years, to no avail. Their hope for prices to fall one day grows ever more distant. Meanwhile, Sister Wai manages to save enough to build a house back in her hometown. After a lifetime of hard work in Macau, is it for living, or merely for survival?
This work was commissioned under Hio Kok's 2017 Playwright Commissioning Project, supported by the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau.
