Kun Iam Temple (also known as Pou Chai Sam Un) is one of Macau's three major Buddhist temples, with a history dating back to the Ming Dynasty. According to tradition, one should not worship at night, so temple visits are usually conducted during the day. However, the annual "Guanyin Open Treasury" event on the 26th day of the first lunar month (March 7th) offers a rare opportunity to enter Kun Iam Temple at night for prayers and blessings.
"Guanyin Open Treasury" is a long-standing Chinese folk custom. Many devotees visit the temple during the Zi hour (from 11:00 PM on March 6th to 1:00 AM on March 7th) to repay debts and borrow from the treasury (praying for wealth) from the Bodhisattva Guanyin, as well as to pray for peace. The temple is bustling with crowds and filled with incense smoke. Stalls selling incense and windmills are also set up on-site.
Kun Iam Temple is a historic Buddhist temple and a significant cultural landmark in Macau.
