The name and heroic image of Guan Gong, a great general of the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, are well-known to every household. Guan Di Dan is the day to commemorate the birth of Guan Gong. Many temples in Macau enshrine Guan Di, with the most famous being the Guan Di Temple (also known as the Sam Kai Vui Kun or Three Streets Association) located on Rua dos Mercadores within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the "Historic Centre of Macao".
Event Details
- Festival Dates: The 13th day of the 5th lunar month (June 20) and the 24th day of the 6th lunar month (July 31) are both celebrated as Guan Di Dan. It is said that Guan Di was born on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month in the 3rd year of the Yanxi era of Emperor Huan of Han, while his eldest son was born on the 13th day of the 5th lunar month in the 1st year of the Guanghe era of Emperor Ling of Han. Nowadays, many people celebrate Guan Di Dan on the 13th day of the 5th lunar month.
- Ceremony: A sacrificial ceremony will be held in front of the Sam Kai Vui Kun (Three Streets Association) on June 20 at 10:00 AM. Devotees will offer flowers and light candles in front of the statue of Guan Di, praying for favorable weather and peace for the nation and its people.
- Performance: A performance activity will be held at the Kam Pek Community Centre (483 Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro) on June 22 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
