The "Grandparents' Class" public welfare program originated in 2014. The concept came from the program's initiator, Mr. He Yongqiang, who, during post-disaster community reconstruction work in a mountainous area of mainland China, invited local elders to weave trash bins from bamboo. This attracted children who gathered around and asked the elders to teach them. This moving act of cultural transmission inspired Mr. He to design the initial concept of the "Grandparents' Class" program.
Since then, the program has received support from various parties. Starting in 2014, it has expanded to 27 provinces and cities across China. The program has invited over 3,600 elders as instructors, serving 450,000 young people. It is primarily active in multiple mainland cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Inner Mongolia, Jiangxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan.
In 2021, Frost Ice Snow Creation officially obtained the brand authorization for "Grandparents' Class," allowing this meaningful program to take root in Macau. It was successfully launched in Macau in 2022, introducing the "Grandparents' Class: Chinese Culture Edition," bringing a class to nearly 600 primary and secondary school students.
Macau Fisherman's Wharf has consistently supported cultural and artistic development and was the exclusive promotional partner for the first Macau International Children's Art Festival. To align with the festival and promote children's understanding of traditional Chinese culture and art, Frost Ice Snow Creation Experimental Theatre Troupe has been specially invited to host the "Grandparents' Class" workshops in July and August.
Focusing on Chinese cultural fields such as fan craftsmanship, traditional Chinese painting, bamboo tying, and Cantonese opera, the workshops invite locally respected elders to personally teach classes at Fisherman's Wharf. They will introduce students to local culture with Chinese characteristics and the historical stories behind it. This allows young people to learn about the cultural knowledge of their hometown, understand their own home, find their roots, and also allows society to witness the power of elders in transmitting cultural education.
