A story of Cold War youth, where rebellion always has its reasons, and the world offers only a pale excuse. In 1960s London, where the sexual revolution meets the Cold War, thirteen-year-old Ginger and her best friend Rosa loudly declare: "I want freedom!" Ginger wants to grow up immediately, while the adults plead: "Just be a child for a while." As church authority wanes and marriage becomes fragile, the adults' lack of boundaries doesn't mean Ginger has none. When her writer father becomes involved with Rosa, this double betrayal propels Ginger into the tide of anti-nuclear protests during the Brazilian nuclear crisis. Sally Potter returns to the formative years of thought, highlighting the true meaning of youthful recklessness for this generation. Elle Fanning, with her fiery red hair, and Alice Englert, daughter of Jane Campion, interpret youth with unrestrained energy.
