It has been over three months since the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, 2015. The disaster claimed over 8,500 precious lives, injured more than 22,300 people, left 2.4 million homeless, and destroyed 5,000 schools.
Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN), a Nepalese non-profit organization that has been partnering with the Macau New Chinese Youth Association on international volunteer services, provided regular community development services before the disaster. After the earthquake, VIN has been dedicated to helping survivors build temporary shelters, purify drinking water, and conduct health talks in communities.
VIN will launch post-disaster reconstruction projects in two villages: JitpurPhedi (about 11 km from Kathmandu) and Okharpauwa (about 17 km from Kathmandu). The work includes:
The project recruits volunteers from around the world to participate in the reconstruction work, but operational funds for the project require external assistance.
In September, two volunteers will travel to Nepal to participate in the reconstruction project. They will repair buildings, schools, classrooms, roads, and public facilities, and work on improving irrigation and water supply. Through various means, they aim to showcase the post-disaster situation in Nepal, call for continued attention to the reconstruction efforts, expand the impact of volunteer services, and directly or indirectly raise social awareness of the issue.
In addition to hands-on volunteer support, from now until August 28, the public can donate to this project at the following locations:
Your contribution, however small, will provide crucial support to the local disaster victims.
