In an era of injustice, the hereditary rebellion of youth is the strongest voice against the establishment. In a small town in 1950s New York State, the air is thick with male chauvinism, where women are relegated to positions of obedience, and abuse and rape are rampant. After repeated violations, five young women can take no more. They secretly form the Foxfire gang, marked by homemade tattoos. They first target teachers who bully girls and lecherous old men, then seduce men to rob them of their money, beating them up in the process. Finally, they become righteous bandits, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Girlpower opens a new horizon, but the price is not light. After The Class, director Laurent Cantet remains attached to his youthful characters, using their purity and relentless struggle to shatter the distorted American dream.
