Presented by the Macao Foundation and supported by the China Cultural Exchange Association, the large-scale original Macau musical Fox Tales was staged for two performances on February 2 and 3, 2013, at The Venetian Theatre.
This production was a significant initiative to promote cultural and artistic development, expand the influence of local Macau creative works, and pioneer a new model for original Macau musical theatre. Spearheaded by Mr. Lee Chun Yat, a director of the China Cultural Exchange Association, who served as the musical's planner, playwright, artistic and music director, Fox Tales is a fantasy romance musical with an underlying message of environmental awareness.
The production brought together renowned talent from Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to foster the diversified development of Macau's cultural and creative industries.
For centuries, a community of mountain spirits and fox demons has lived in the "Wild Forest." As their woodland home shrinks, they fear being driven to extinction by humans. Xiao Hu, the young fox protagonist, suggests they transform into human form and move to the city. His uncle, Hu Er, opposes the idea, believing humans are dangerous and untrustworthy.
A wager is made: if Xiao Hu can find a girl in the human world who truly loves him and accepts his true fox spirit identity within 100 days, the spirits will agree to move to the city and integrate into human society.
Transforming into a human named Hu Yue, Xiao Hu arrives in the metropolis of "Silver City" and finds work at the nightclub "Dreamers." There, he meets the smart and cheerful bartender, Jin Feng, who dreams of becoming a famous singer. As Xiao Hu works at the club, he encounters a variety of patrons—including the obsessive gangster Xiang Hai, the gambling detective Brother Wen, and the faded star singer Fang Fang—and begins to see the complexities of the human world. Despite this, he and Jin Feng grow closer.
As the 100-day deadline approaches, Xiao Hu's true identity is revealed, leading to a surprising proposal from Jin Feng...
