"If you have an ideal, please strive to fly; to strive to fly, if indeed you have a dream."
These lyrics are from a song in the musical Wong Sze-ma and Cowboy Musical - Flight Chess, performed by the Hong Kong Children's Musical Theatre in August. The script is adapted from the real-life story of cartoonist Wong Sze-ma, chronicling his creative past, family anecdotes, and the end of his life. The production received an enthusiastic response in Hong Kong, garnering unanimous praise from all sectors and is regarded as one of the most heartwarming and moving musicals of recent times.
For many years, musicals have predominantly featured foreign scripts or adaptations, with few created using local elements. Fong Chong Ten Creative Garden invites the founder of the theatre troupe and director of the play, Ms. Hu Baoxiu, as well as the play's scriptwriter and lyricist, Wai Yin, to share their experiences in person. The event will also explore the developmental space and direction for local children's musicals.
Wai Yin is a renowned Hong Kong multicultural figure, composer, lyricist, cartoonist, columnist, and senior professional in Hong Kong's media and public relations industries. He is particularly skilled in creating children's songs and alternative music, earning him the honorary titles "Father of Hong Kong Children's Songs" and "Godfather of Alternative Music." His widely known works include the "Xiao Ming" series songs like Xiao Ming Goes to Guangzhou, I Propose to You, Which Family's Rooster, Which Family Guesses, and countless others. Beyond music, he has also produced works including picture books, novels, food books, comic collections, and musical theatre scripts.
Hu Baoxiu is the founder of the Hong Kong Children's Musical Theatre. She holds a Master's in Value Education from the Faculty of Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and graduated from the School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in both Performance and Directing. Between 2000 and 2013, she made multiple research trips to New York, London, Los Angeles, Prague, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, and Germany. She focuses on drama education and performance work, and is dedicated to creating for children and youth. She published her first novel Angel Panpan – Embarking on a Journey to a Good Life in 2011 and The Little Prince Musical: Selected Songs and Script in 2012. With limited ability, she creates infinite possibilities, aiming to influence lives and make the world a better place through creation and arts education.
