EXiM 2017 once again brings together experimental animation works from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao for a unique exchange. While these four regions share a common Chinese cultural heritage, their distinct historical backgrounds and development paths have fostered diverse social ideologies. Today, each region grapples with its own unique social issues. Both historical context and contemporary social realities inevitably inspire and influence artistic creation in various forms.
This screening event not only showcases the brilliant video creations of artists but also offers a glimpse into the current social conditions of each region through the works. It provides an opportunity to closely examine and appreciate the similarities and differences among the creations from these four places.
EXiM 2017 focuses on animation as its curatorial direction. With the widespread availability of digital devices and software in recent years, an increasing number of animation works have emerged, including many outstanding experimental pieces. As Mainland China curator Cao Kai mentioned in his curatorial statement, it is 'like a high-speed laboratory.' Taiwanese curator Shi Changjie remarked on the state of animation creation in Taiwan: 'Whether in terms of quantity or quality, the performance is stunning!' This is precisely why this year's EXiM screening event is dedicated to animation creation.
