EXiM 2013: Korea Experimental Video Festival in Macao
EXiM 2013 invites Hangjun Lee, an outstanding Korean experimental filmmaker and organizer of the EXiS festival, to curate two screening programs of Korean experimental works. The festival presents a summary of past and recent works from EXiS, including several pieces in 16mm film format.
The highlight of the festival is a performance titled "Siting Cinema," executed by Hangjun Lee using four 16mm film projectors. Beyond watching 16mm films, the most significant aspect is experiencing the essence of expanded cinema conveyed through Lee's improvisational live performance with multi-projection collage. The audience's gaze is no longer fixed on a single screen or constant playback rate but instead wanders among overlapping, moving, and variable-speed projections. The work transforms with each site-specific environment, creating an interlaced dialogue between virtual images and real space. The performance also incorporates music and sounds composed by Hankil Ryu and Kim Tae Young, offering an experimental creation that deconstructs and reconstructs light and sound.
In an era dominated by digital formats for shooting, making, and broadcasting images, film (or celluloid) seems a distant medium, with some believing it belongs in a history museum. While many young people today may have never seen a 16mm film work, numerous artists and filmmakers continue to insist on using this textured medium. Their motivation is not merely preference or conservatism but a quest for new possibilities in moving image creation. Living in an age of coexistence between film and digital imaging invites us to ponder the ultimate meaning of the image.
