Performance Details
- Date: March 31, 2018
- Venue: Dom Pedro V Theatre (Asia's oldest Western-style theatre)
- Program: A combination of two Italian one-act comic operas:
- "La serva padrona" (The Maid Turned Mistress) by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1733)
- "Il segreto di Susanna" (Susanna's Secret) by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1909)
About the Operas
This production weaves together two stories about courtship and marriage where the female protagonists cleverly outwit their male counterparts, offering a witty satire on the shortcomings of love.
- "La serva padrona": Set in mid-19th century Macau, a maid sets her sights on her employer, using flirtation and benign deception to make him believe he has loved her all along. The character of the boss is inspired by a famous Western painter who lived in Macau at the time.
- "Il segreto di Susanna": The heroine's secret is not what her jealous husband fears, but a harmless habit the couple can share.
Creative Vision
Producer Andrea Bettinelli Dal Cin and stage director Peter Gordon have reimagined these works for Macau, merging them into a single, accessible story where art imitates life. The music is joyful and playful, with performers engaging directly with the audience. The production aims to delight both new fans and opera enthusiasts alike.
