Organized by 'Drama Farmers' and funded by the 'Macao Foundation' and the 'Cultural Affairs Bureau', the Black Box Theatre Project 2017 is dedicated to organizing and curating performances. It provides more opportunities for theatre enthusiasts to learn, practice, and perform, collectively promoting the diversified development of Macao's theatre scene.
The fourth production of the year is '8 Aunties', brought to you by Malaysia's 'OnzProduction'.
How should a woman's life be portrayed? She walks out from the stage, singing Sammi Cheng's "Careful Woman, Careful Woman." Shedding the provocative and energetic melody, '8 Mei' dances with her uncoordinated body, as if giving a warning, or like a dying person preparing to tell her vigorous life story. Yet, in this increasingly indifferent society, is anyone willing to listen to her story?
The term "8 Aunties" has always carried a vulgar and crude impression. But what kind of woman does this play, '8 Aunties', actually tell? The story begins with eight-year-old 'Ba Mei', walking through the green years of budding love, thinking that beautiful love still awaits ahead, but ultimately stepping onto the point of no return that is marriage. After the wedding march plays, 'Ba Mei' takes off her wedding dress and changes into casual clothes. The audience will then know that 'Ba Mei's' tumultuous life is about to begin.
The performance is primarily in Cantonese, mixed with dialogue in Mandarin, English, Tamil (ancient Indian language), and Hokkien, fully showcasing Malaysian characteristics.
