A 2017 Macao Foundation Citizens' Showcase theatrical production, "Dragon," adapted from two short stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, the author of "Rashomon."
In Nara, Japan, the monk Keiin of Kofuku-ji Temple possesses an extraordinarily long nose, which is said to grant him the power of foresight. This ability attracts a surge of pilgrims, boosting the town's tourism and souvenir industries. However, after he gets rid of his nose, his remarkable power also disappears, leading to public discontent. One day, a mysterious wooden sign appears by Sarusawa Pond, stating, "On March 3rd, a dragon will ascend from here." As the townspeople are half in doubt, strange events begin to occur one after another—a dragon impregnates a woman, churns in the pond, summons fish, and appears in a young girl's dream... The entire town's ecology and the mentality of its residents are completely transformed. Monk Keiin tries hard to prove the dragon is a hoax, nearly getting beaten up in the process. As March 3rd approaches, tourists from all directions gather, waiting in an excited, almost hysterical state to witness the miracle!
