Where people gather, settlements form. As the social structure of a settlement becomes more refined, with the construction of streets, a city emerges. Through archaeological excavation and urban planning, the unique developmental patterns behind each city are revealed. This event explores the transition from settlement spaces to the small, walled neighborhoods (圍里), where people built walls, streets, enclosures, lanes, and houses, creating a distinct sense of boundary.
This two-part lecture on November 30th is like a journey through time. The following rubbing workshop on December 1st allows participants to personally touch the boundary markers—boundary wall stones—left behind by demolished buildings. Rubbing is a form of recording and a historical interpretation, transferring textual information from stone to paper through careful impression.
