"Debris – Alexandre Farto (Vhils) Exhibition" opened on Wednesday, May 31, at 6:30 PM at the Navy Yard No.1 – Contemporary Art Center. The exhibition is one of the featured projects of this year's Macao Arts Festival, showcasing over twenty works, including four new pieces created in public spaces inspired by Macao.
Alexandre Farto (also known as Vhils) is renowned for his unique visual language that explores the interdependent relationship between contemporary life and the urban environment. His distinctive style has gained significant international recognition. He is best known for his innovative carving technique, using unconventional tools to remove layers from walls and other media, a method celebrated as one of the most compelling approaches in urban art.
Vhils skillfully employs a diverse range of mediums, including stencil painting, wall carving, billboards, screen printing, pyrotechnic explosions, and neon lights, to explore the concept of "aesthetics of destruction" and continuously push the boundaries of artistic expression. This exhibition presents his perspective on often-forgotten collective urban memory and history, revealing specific moments in the process of globalization, as well as the artist's own experiences, identity, and concerns.
Macao's historical architecture, heritage, and traditional atmosphere have long been a source of inspiration for Farto. The exhibition extends his creative context into the dynamics related to Macao's identity, reflecting on the relationship between time and history, construction and demolition, and analyzing the conditions of human existence. It features works incorporating local Macao elements, such as new billboards assembled from street posters and reliefs created from found old doors. A slow-motion video filmed on Macao's streets will also provide an immersive viewing experience.
The theme of the "Debris" exhibition is not confined to the gallery space but extends across Macao in the form of public murals. These include two works at the Macao Portuguese School, one exterior wall on Rua do Tronco Velho in Taipa Old Town, and the exterior wall at No. 1 Rua do Governador Tamagnini Barbosa in Taipa.
