Explore the traditional culture of the "Waking Lion" through the fun craft of lightweight clay.
Legend has it that in ancient times, a severe plague broke out in the Nanhai area of Guangdong, leaving corpses everywhere... At that moment, a mythical beast descended from the sky. Wherever it walked, the plague miraculously disappeared.
Later, people used bamboo strips and paper to create the form of this beast, dancing to drum music as an act of worship. Because the beast closely resembled the legendary lion, villagers called it the "Auspicious Lion" (瑞獅), carrying the implied meaning of warding off evil spirits. Since the Cantonese pronunciation of "Auspicious" (瑞) is similar to "Sleep" (睡), calling it a "Sleeping Lion" was considered inauspicious. Thus, people changed the name to "Waking Lion" (醒獅).
Using the traditional colors of the Waking Lion as a base, participants can enjoy the happiness of handmade creation while deepening their impression of Chinese traditional culture. The Waking Lion is a symbol of good fortune and auspiciousness, wishing peace and joy for the coming year and adding a touch of New Year's atmosphere to your home.
