The Breakdance Culture Performance Project is a cultural research and innovative fusion initiative focused on breakdancing. By collaborating breakdance with other art forms, the project aims to break away from its singular, fixed cultural representation and image, bringing forth novel and groundbreaking local breakdance works. This iteration of the project chooses to integrate with contemporary dance, using elements of breakdancing as a creative starting point to weave a 'contemporary' breakdance piece characterized by freedom and openness.
Breaking (Breakdance) often appears before the public in the form of Battles. Therefore, this work questions the participating B-Boys and B-Girls about the relationship between Breaking and Battle as its creative starting point, especially in a place and era distant from its cultural origins. The work extracts different elements that constitute the performativity and spectacle of a Battle (personality, surprise, the interplay of space and opponents, audience participation/inclusion, etc.) as developmental material. Juxtaposing the concept of 'balance,' it attempts to construct dance sequences within the work using Breaking movement elements to create meaning and expression.
