An original historical drama featuring performing elites from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau on the same stage. The play offers a fresh interpretation of the ancient sage Confucius, engaging in a dialogue with his different selves across the ages.
Set in the Spring and Autumn period, the 73-year-old Confucius, still holding a high office in the State of Lu, is visited by a former disciple. This encounter leads him on a journey through time, recalling a pivotal crisis a decade earlier—the "Chen-Cai Distress." While leading his disciples to Chu, Confucius faced his greatest life challenge, caught between survival and upholding his beliefs.
Based on real history, this original play peels back the layers of the revered teacher to reveal lesser-known stories behind the legend. First staged in Hong Kong in 2016, the revised and deepened version, Confucius: Looking Back at 63, was nominated for Best Costume Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Continuing the success of last year's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Theatre Exchange, performing elites from the three regions reunite for this touring production to Macau and Guangzhou. The cast features Hong Kong actors Cheung Ho-yin (Zhang Kejian) and Mak Chau (Mai Qiu) portraying Confucius, alongside Macau actors Li Junjie, Huang Tianen, and Liang Jianting, presenting the ancient philosopher's wisdom and demeanor.
