The Chestnut Festival is a traditional festival highly valued by the Macanese community and is listed on Macao's Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory. The festival commemorates the charitable act of "cutting his cloak to give to a beggar" by Saint Martin, a Catholic bishop in the 4th century AD. Legend has it that the story took place during the autumn and winter season when new wine was produced and chestnuts were harvested. Therefore, November 11 was designated as "Saint Martin's Day," celebrated by tasting wine and chestnuts, hence the name "Chestnut Festival."
To help the public learn about this festival, the organizer is hosting the "Carnival Chestnut Festival." Through Macanese cuisine and chestnut-related food stalls, stage performances, photo installations, and game booths, the event promotes Macao's unique Macanese culture in a carnival format.
