Following the resounding successes of The Flower Princess in 2007 and The Reincarnation of the Red Plum in 2014, Cantonese opera master Pak Suet Sin (Bak Suet Sin) once again revived the timeless classic Butterfly Shadow Red Pear Legend last year to commemorate the centenary of the legendary playwright Tong Tik Sang. This June, Sin Jeh returns to Macao, leading her beloved disciples Chan Bo-chu and Mui Suet-si in a full-length performance of this treasured opera.
Under her direction, a stellar cast including Yau Sing-po, Pang Chi-kuen, Liu Kwok-sum, and Lo Lai-sze lend their talents. The production features a star-studded creative team: choreographic genius Yuri Ng serves as Assistant Artistic Director, Hong Kong Film Award and Golden Horse Award winner for Best Original Film Score Leon Ko composes the interlude music, and multiple Hong Kong Film Award winner for Best Art Direction Yee Chung-man acts as Art Director. Together, they reimagine this classic with a new stage concept.
Butterfly Shadow Red Pear Legend is a tale of love that transcends life and death. It weaves the unwavering devotion of the scholar Zhao Ruzhou with the unforgettable love of the beautiful and talented Xie Suqiu, aided by the witty supporting character Liu Gongdao. The plot is ingeniously crafted with exquisite poetic lyrics, creating a story both intricate and enchanting.
First performed in 1957 by the Hong Kong Sin Fung Ming Opera Troupe, starring the late masters Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet Sin, this work remains an immortal masterpiece. This new version, revised and directed by Sin Jeh, not only preserves the essence of the original but also infuses elements from the classic Yam-Pak films. With lavish sets and costumes, and an unparalleled cast, this is an unmissable event for opera enthusiasts.
