Lecture: Broken Promises of Digital Music and the Path to Personal Music Creation Practice
Digital streaming once promised the exploration of the world and discovery of diversity, but now that promise is almost broken. Music charts around the world have become more instant and uniform than ever before. The tech industry has gained an unprecedented voice, often speaking of platforms, industry, financing, and technology, yet musicians and songs are often absent from these discussions. However, the phenomenon of musicians connecting across the globe through streaming platforms or smaller sites has already surpassed what can be fully explained by the term 'subculture'.
Xiao Shu has served as a judge for multiple editions of Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards and Golden Indie Music Awards. His former roles include Creative Director of XueXue Creative Space, KKBOX Expert Music Critic, and columnist for La Vie and Cheers magazines. He currently serves as a music critic for The Big Issue, Music Channel Director of StreetVoice, host of the 'Xiao Shu's New Songs' segment on Blow Music, Chief Planner of the 'Witness the Birth of Big Bands' event series, and host of the radio program 'StreetVoice: Future Tense'.
