Against the Wind is a musical feast presented by flutist Ko Pui Yi and her friends, spanning works from Bach to Michio Miyagi, traversing from the Baroque period to early 20th-century compositions. The performance features a variety of ensembles, from solo to group performances, including flute and guitar duets, string and flute septets, and collaborations between guitar and harp. The diverse musical forms and ensemble configurations place high demands on the performers' styles, creating a party-like atmosphere of liveliness and joy, offering many musical surprises for the audience.
This concert showcases numerous works of different styles, presented in collaboration with a group of long-term artistic partners. The opening piece is J.S. Bach's Sonata in E-flat major for Flute and Continuo, BWV 1031, performed by flute, guitar, and cello, replacing the original harpsichord accompaniment, promising a brilliant sonic effect.
The finale is Claude-Paul Taffanel's Fantaisie sur Mignon, performed in collaboration with renowned Macao pianist Long Yee Yan. As a 20th-century work, it presents considerable challenges in coordination between the solo flutist and the piano. The piece offers the flutist many opportunities for solo expression, allowing the audience to reflect on the many works from different eras presented throughout the concert.
