About the Play

Trio in E-flat Major is a stage play script by Eric Rohmer, a master of the French New Wave cinema. The plot focuses on the subtle, on-and-off relationship of a former couple over the course of a year. Playfully introducing Rohmer's favored theme of music, the play uses it as both a catalyst for change in their relationship and an excuse for their emotional tug-of-war. Although the protagonists vehemently deny being caught in a romantic competition—which would seem too vulgar—all their actions betray their so-called pride. Through their constant debates, tests, misunderstandings, and reconciliations, the play offers a glimpse into the truth of romantic relationships, making it a refined comedy worth savoring.
