About the Play

Trio in E-flat Major is a stage play script by the master of French New Wave cinema, Eric Rohmer. The plot focuses on the subtle, on-and-off relationship of a former couple over the course of a year. Rohmer playfully introduces his favored theme—music—into this two-person party, where music acts as a catalyst for the changing dynamics of their relationship and an excuse for their push-and-pull. Although the protagonists vehemently deny being caught in a romantic competition—which would seem too vulgar—all their actions betray their so-called self-respect. Through their constant debates, tests, misunderstandings, and reconciliations, we glimpse the truth within a romantic relationship. It is a refined comedy worth savoring.
