The Footprint Small Theatre Book Festival has reached its eighth edition since 2010. Moving from having no set theme to adapting texts by Macau writers or experimenting with unfamiliar literary genres, the festival is often thought to be created by those with deep literary backgrounds. In fact, the opposite is true. It is precisely because theatre practitioners recognize their own reading deficiencies that they use the 'Book Festival' to accept challenges and stimulation from various genres and subjects, embarking on a cross-boundary adventure. From the start, it has ventured into experimental and avant-garde territory, not aiming to create polished, mainstream works, but focusing on crossing the boundaries between literature and theatre, allowing niche audiences from both fields to flow, observe, and reflect.
The 'Seven Silences' series is developed through the continuous publication of related works.
'Seven Silences: Anger' is adapted from the short story of the same name by contemporary Hong Kong writer Wong Bik-wan from her collection Seven Deadly Sins.
The story portrays a group of characters from Hong Kong's underclass—including sex workers, unemployed laborers, thieves, and cleaners—who live together in a dilapidated public housing estate, barely surviving. They endure societal neglect and injustice, their lives intertwined near and far into an inescapable web of fate. Without purchasing power or recognizable faces, they struggle for survival in the most卑微 of places.
Life is like dust; fates are entangled. The more they struggle, the deeper they fall, yet they remain unseen.
