About the Footprint Small Theatre Book Festival Organized by Footprint, the "Footprint Small Theatre Book Festival" is an annual Macau event promoting cross-disciplinary performances between literature and theatre. This was its eighth edition since its inception in 2010.
Performance Content "Cheongsam Song" is adapted from the short story collection "Cheong-Sam" published by Deolinda da Conceição in 1956. It is re-written and performed with Cantonese Nanyin storytelling and singing. In an era of lost autonomy, who dons that black cheongsam, softly singing a mournful yet resilient elegy?
Cantonese Nanyin, also known as "Dishui Nanyin," is a unique storytelling art form described as "speaking as if singing, singing as if speaking." "Dishui" is a divination term. Historically, Cantonese people referred to the blind as "Ah Shui," hence the Nanyin sung primarily by the blind became known as "Dishui Nanyin."
About Kuan Kwan Cheong Cantonese Opera & Music Association The Kuan Kwan Cheong Cantonese Opera & Music Association (hereafter "the Association") is a representative Nanyin music society in Macau, founded in June 1995. Its mission is dedicated to the inheritance and promotion of Cantonese opera and music exchange.
Since its establishment, the Association has been invited to and organized numerous Nanyin and musical performances annually, including at least one large-scale production. Each year, various media outlets interview its president and members. President Kuan Kwan Cheong is also invited by universities, academic, and cultural institutions for lectures and exchanges.
President Kuan Kwan Cheong has been teaching Nanyin at the Association for a long time, with dozens of cumulative students. Currently, he teaches Nanyin at the Association one to two days a week, with 8–10 students per class. The Association holds multiple Nanyin student-teacher concerts each year to promote the art.
With over 60 years in the arts, Kuan Kwan Cheong has attained high mastery in wind, string, and vocal performance. He has served as a musician for troupes of renowned performers such as Ho Fei-fan, Mak Bing-wing, and Yam Pak. He studied Nanyin under Lau Jau, delved deeply into its various aspects, and became a master, performing publicly many times and releasing records. In 2009, he was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit by the government. In 2011, Macau's Nanyin storytelling was selected for the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, with Kuan as the representative inheritor of this item. In 2014, he was invited to perform Nanyin for Peng Liyuan, wife of Xi Jinping, at the Mandarin's House.
