Kim Yong-hwa is one of South Korea's most successful filmmakers, consistently breaking box office records while earning acclaim from both audiences and critics. All six of his screenwritten and directed films have achieved remarkable box office success in South Korea and across Asia. His films often center on compelling stories of overcoming adversity, blending entertainment with spectacular, cutting-edge visual effects.
His notable works include My Brother (2003), 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), Mr. Go (2013), Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (2018). Along with the Gods became the second highest-grossing film in South Korean history and surpassed Train to Busan as the highest-grossing Korean film in several Asian markets.
Kim is also the founder of the leading visual effects company Dexter Studios, responsible for the stunning effects in major Asian blockbusters such as The Taking of Tiger Mountain, The Monkey King, Kung Fu Yoga, and the Along with the Gods series. He is currently working on the third and fourth installments of Along with the Gods and is collaborating with a new generation of Korean filmmakers, overseeing a $20 million budget to produce the disaster film Ashfall, which depicts North and South Korea joining forces to combat a volcanic catastrophe.
