Climate change is an increasingly severe problem. 2024 was the hottest year on record. Extreme weather is causing more frequent or powerful storms, floods, heatwaves, and droughts, affecting more crops and severely threatening the livelihoods of farmers and herders, who may even be displaced due to food shortages. Statistics show that in 2024 alone, extreme climate events, especially droughts and floods triggered by El Niño, have plunged over 96 million people in 18 countries into a food crisis, severely affecting Southern Africa, South Asia, and the Horn of Africa. The interplay between hunger and climate change undoubtedly harms children the most, as they are the most vulnerable. Over 1 billion children and young people under 25 globally live in areas directly dependent on land and natural resources. The worsening climate change and land degradation issues subject them to food shortages, poor harvests, and volatile food prices. Although children bear the least responsibility for the climate crisis, they directly suffer its heavy and prolonged impacts, including on food and nutrition, water and sanitation, disease, immunity, and physical and mental development.
