The tyrant Dionysus angers the simple shepherd Melos with his wanton killings. Melos attempts an assassination but fails and is captured. Before his execution, Melos makes a pact with the king: he promises to return, but requests a three-day reprieve to prepare for his sister's wedding, leaving his best friend Selinuntius as a hostage in Syracuse.
