Overview
To enhance Macao tertiary students' interest in learning Portuguese and encourage more students to continue their studies, thereby injecting new momentum into cultivating more Chinese-Portuguese bilingual talents for the Macao SAR, the Higher Education Services Office (GAES) continues to organize the "Portuguese Language Master – Portugal Summer Camp" in 2018. Eligible Macao tertiary students are welcome to apply.
Eligibility
- Hold a Macao Resident Identity Card.
- Be enrolled in a full-time higher diploma or bachelor's degree program in Macao or abroad during the 2017/2018 academic year.
- Applicants must either have no prior Portuguese language foundation (except for graduating seniors) OR have elementary level (A1) or higher proficiency (reference: 200 hours of class time for A1 level at the Instituto Português do Oriente).
- Exclusions: Native Portuguese speakers; graduates of Portuguese primary/secondary schools; students enrolled in higher education programs where Portuguese is the primary language of instruction; and graduating seniors from four-year or longer bachelor's degree programs.
Program Structure
Phase 1: Local Preparation (February–June 2018)
- For beginners (no foundation): Can choose to attend a "Portuguese Basic Training Course" (50 hours) organized by the Instituto Português do Oriente in February, March, or June 2018. Quota: 250.
- For students with A1 level or above: Must pass a "Portuguese Proficiency Test." Quota: 50.
Phase 2: Summer Camp in Portugal (July–August 2018)
GAES will select 85 outstanding students (60 from the training course, 25 from the proficiency test) to proceed to the second phase.
- Selected students will travel to Portugal in two batches during July and August 2018 for a one-month intensive Portuguese summer camp.
- Local institutions will provide intensive Portuguese instruction tailored to students' proficiency levels, aiming to improve language skills and understanding of local history and culture in a relaxed, engaging environment.
- The SAR Government will provide round-trip air tickets (valid for three months) between Macao and Portugal.
- Local accommodation, meals, and extracurricular itineraries are to be arranged by the students themselves.
