Organised by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in 1993, the FIVB World Grand Prix is a premier annual women's volleyball tournament held in the middle of the year. With a total prize award of US$1 million, the competition features top national teams from around the world. Teams compete in preliminary rounds across various global cities, with the highest-scoring teams advancing to a final round in one host city.
Macao became a host city for the preliminary rounds in 1994. The event in Macao is jointly organised by the Macau Sport Development Board and the Volleyball Association of Macau, China. In 2001, Macao was selected to host the final round for the first time, featuring the world's eight strongest teams.
