Event Overview
The inaugural Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF) was held from April 22 to May 1, 2016, at Cinematheque‧Passion. The festival's theme was "doMEmentary," focusing on personal stories and intimate narratives.
Featured Films
- Screening Highlights: The festival showcased 18 acclaimed documentaries from 10 countries and regions, including Chinese-language, Asian, Portuguese, European, and American films.
- Award-Winning Selections: Featured films included:
- Taxi (Iran), winner of the Golden Bear at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
- The Look of Silence (Indonesia), nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 88th Academy Awards.
- The Iron Ministry (China), winner of the Best Documentary award at the 2012 Golden Horse Awards.
Special Guests & Programs
- Guest Filmmakers: Several renowned directors and film professionals attended the festival for post-screening discussions and interactions with the local audience.
- Focus Director: The festival honored Portuguese auteur Pedro Costa as its "Focus Director," screening three of his seminal works: Horse Money, Change Nothing, and In Vanda's Room. Costa was also invited to host a masterclass.
- Opening Film: The festival opened with Taste of Youth by Golden Horse Award-winning director Cheung King-wai. This screening was its world premiere following the Hong Kong International Film Festival, with the director in attendance.
- Additional Guests: Producers and directors from other featured films, such as Wansei Back Home and 32+4, were also invited.
Festival Activities
Beyond the main screenings, the festival organized warm-up screenings and a public video submission competition to encourage local engagement with the documentary genre.
