A history that Macau residents should know: Half a century since the turbulent "1 2 3" incident.
From a school expansion project in Taipa, against the backdrop of Portuguese colonial high-handed governance, the 1966 "123 Incident" escalated into a large-scale, bloody conflict across Macau opposing Portuguese rule. The ideologies of the Cultural Revolution and national consciousness intervened, leading the Portuguese administration to eventually admit fault and pay reparations. Macau became a "half-liberated zone," with pro-communist associations gradually taking over civil affairs. Half a century later, the "123 Incident" continues to influence Macau's political and social development.
On December 4th, historians, educators, researchers, and political commentators from Macau and Hong Kong will gather at the Livraria Portuguesa to share perspectives from different generations. This event aims to build a platform for rational discourse in civil society, allowing participants to reflect on the past to understand the present and contemplate Macau's future.
