The Science of Learning

Why do children learn English much faster than adults?

The human brain has a specific area for language acquisition called Broca's Area. This area begins rapid development between the ages of 2-4, with the most sensitive period being 3-6 years old. During this time, languages stored in this region are processed as 'native languages,' meaning they can be acquired quickly and used flexibly. Broca's Area gradually closes down after the age of 12. After that, learning a new language no longer directly accesses Broca's Area but is instead stored in the memory area, leading to a more traditional and rigid 'translation' approach rather than intuitive language use.
