Yayoi Shirai A master of the Edo Senke school of tea ceremony from Tokyo, Japan. With over 50 years of experience, she is dedicated to preserving and promoting tea culture.
Japanese "Sado" (The Way of Tea) is a culture that originated in China and was transmitted to Japan. Tea was first introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century. The ritual of drinking Matcha, central to the tea ceremony, originated in the 15th century and was brought to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks.
"Sado" uses the preparation and drinking of tea as an opportunity to deepen the connection between people. The concept of "Ichigo Ichie" (one time, one meeting) treats each tea gathering as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, a moment that can never be replicated in future time or space. By cherishing the present moment of gathering with friends, it expresses gratitude and respect for each individual.
The essence of the tea ceremony lies in maintaining a serene and respectful state of mind, letting go of arrogance and luxury. The host and guests complete the ritual in harmony and mutual respect. The inner meaning of Sado is a practice to train one's mind to be calm and to cultivate a heart and attitude of reverence for heaven and consideration for others.
