New Promised Land
– Video and installation exhibition
(English Scroll Down)

- 台灣藝術家張巧玉與本地藝術家邱逢霖透過不同的宗教信仰來探討「樂園」,以- 及神對人民的「承諾」;

“New Promised Land” refers to the “Promised Land” in the Old Testament. God promised the Jewish people as long as they were obedient, despite all the torments, there would be a land of fertility for them in the end.

●Opening:8/28 7:00pm
●Venue:N.º 55-59 Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (Mong-Ha Villas)

“New Promised Land” is the name of a Burmese restaurant in Macao, it’s said that it serves the best coconut curry noodles in town. This small bowl of noodles represents the previous generation of immigrants from Southeast Asia. They came to Macao with all their hardships, just looking for a place of peace.
Macao has thus become the “Promised Land” for different ethnic groups over the years. Five hundred years ago, the Portuguese turned the fertile land, Macao, into the colonizer’s “paradise”, but the people refused to give in. They toppled the colonel’s statue, longing to fight for their own paradise. After more than four hundred years, China redefined this “paradise” then gave it new promises: a high degree of autonomy and economic development. This land has gradually become the richest “New Promised Land” for many people living here.
People in the “Promised Land” used to live without a worry in their lives until they saw the collapse of another “Promised Land”, in which promises became lies overnight, and the crises were all hidden under the beautiful appearance. Is “Promised Land” just a well-intentioned imagination?
If God doesn’t fulfill his promises, we can just give up our faith. What if the promisers or the government don’t keep their promises? What should we do living in this place?
The exhibition invites three local artists, together with three non-local artists who are closely related to Macao, to search for the answers. Under the theme of Macao, each local artist is paired with a non-local artist. They are to explore the meaning of “promises” in the “Promised Land”:
As one of the new generation of Portguese, Artist João Garcia Neto seeks the promises of the former colony, meanwhile the local artist Ao Ngan Wa deconstructs the known and unknown “promises” in Macao.
The Taiwanese artist and the Macao artist delve into the “Promise Land”, to question the “promises” from gods to people, through different religions and beliefs.
Living in Hong Kong, which is also a special administrative region of China, the artist shares her feelings about the gradual change of “Promised Land” and “promises”, and starts a conversation with the Macao artist through videos.
We encourage you to walk into the three groups of “Promised Land”, to feel the various contrasts between the lands and the society, and to reflect on the “promises” given by the current “Promised Land”. As a citizen of the city of Macao, how should we respond to these “promises”?
